8 わたしよりも前にきた人は、みな盗人であり、強盗である。羊は彼らに聞き従わなかった。
9 わたしは門である。わたしをとおってはいる者は救われ、また出入りし、牧草にありつくであろう。
10 盗人が来るのは、盗んだり、殺したり、滅ぼしたりするためにほかならない。わたしがきたのは、羊に命を得させ、豊かに得させるためである。
11 わたしはよい羊飼である。よい羊飼は、羊のために命を捨てる。
12 羊飼ではなく、羊が自分のものでもない雇人は、おおかみが来るのを見ると、羊をすてて逃げ去る。そして、おおかみは羊を奪い、また追い散らす。
13 彼は雇人であって、羊のことを心にかけていないからである。
14 わたしはよい羊飼であって、わたしの羊を知り、わたしの羊はまた、わたしを知っている。(ヨハネによる福音書 第 10 章)

8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.
9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture.
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.
13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—

イエス・キリストのことを「羊飼」と呼ぶのは、このイエスの教えから来ている。
イエスは、「わたしの羊はまた、わたしを知っている」と述べて、羊である人々との密接な関係を当然のこととされている。これは、霊的な関係のことを述べており、イエスの教えを通って天国に入れると述べておられる。

霊的に、人々を本当に救うのは、狼が来ても逃げずに、羊のために命をかける良き羊飼であるとされ、ご自分は羊のために命を捧げるとしておられる。

人々の魂を狙う狼、無責任な雇われ人、そして、羊を命をかけて守る「良き羊飼」が、羊である人々を巡って霊的な戦いを繰り広げているのが、この世です。
